Red Mountain Pass, Colorado
September 22, 2014
I have been chasing American Girl Mine for several years. I first encountered this Red Mountain structure as part of a hike to Corkscrew Turntable. The trail dropped down from a dirt road behind Guston through dense aspens, opening up to the mine and the talus hill. Several photo expeditions worked shots from behind the mine looking across the valley. On this September 2014 trip, I decided to shoot from Highway 550 below with the 300 / 2.8 telephoto lens. American Girl Mine is near Ironton and built during the 1880's; closed during the 1893 Silver Panic; then reopened in 1898 as gold was discovered in the ores.
